Gift of leadership

24 October 2017
‘If it is to lead, do it diligently.’ Romans 12:8 NIV

Leadership is both a privilege and a challenge. It’s something we all do to an extent. When we persuade or encourage someone else to do something, we’ve led them. But some of us are called to a higher level of leadership. Whether that’s within the church, or the secular world, God calls some of us specifically into leadership roles. He gifts us with the ability to lead others. The Bible says: ‘We have different gifts, according to the grace given to each of us. If your gift is…to lead, do it diligently’ (Romans 12:6,8 NIV). So if we think that God’s given us the gift of leading others, what would make us good leaders? A good leader knows where God wants them to go, and is able to show others the value of going with them. They’re more interested in the people they’re called to lead than themselves. They’ll appreciate others and the role they play in the team. They’ll understand that others also have specific gifts which need to be developed, so will encourage those people to use them. They’ll be approachable, patient and open to the suggestions of others. Good leaders don’t assume that they’ll get everything right. They realise they’re part of a team. Paul was a leader like this. ‘Every time I think of you, I give thanks to my God…for you have been my partners in spreading the Good News’ (Philippians 1:3,5 NLT). And if we’re feeling like we’re not capable of following God’s calling into leadership, then remember that God gives us the strength and ability to do what He’s calling us to do. We just need to have the courage to take that step and use the gifts He’s given us.

What Now?
Slowly read through Romans 12:6-8. Ask God which gifts He’s given you and pray for the courage to step out and use them.
