An appetite for God’s Word

13 October 2017
‘His Word can cut through our spirits.’ Hebrews 4:12 CEV

As we read the Bible, God will give us strength and guidance for our lives that we can’t get any other way. Eliphaz said to Job: ‘He bruises, but he binds up; he wounds, but his hands make whole’ (Job 5:18 NKJV). That’s what God does to us as we read the Scriptures. ‘His Word can cut through our spirits.’ He brings to the surface long-standing and unresolved issues, and helps us to deal with them. He confronts us over our habits and shows us how to conquer them. He shows us where we’ve got selfish and unloving attitudes, which then gives us a chance to repent and change our ways. When we’re regularly reading the Bible, we’ll be more aware of what God says about who He is, who we are, and what He’s done for us. Making that time to regularly read it can be tricky. Life’s busy and we can feel too tired to try and fit it in to our day. But it’s vital that we do. We’ve got to rearrange our priorities. The truth is that we make time for the things that we want, that we value, and that we enjoy. So if we’re struggling to make the time to read the Bible, we need to ask God to give us a greater appetite for His Word. When we get physically hungry, we know we need to find something to eat. When we get spiritually hungry, we need to be reading God’s Word. The Bible says: ‘Man does not live on bread alone but on every word that comes from the mouth of the Lord’ (Deuteronomy 8:3 NIV).

What Now?
Each time you get hungry today, read a few verses of the Bible before you eat.
