In Bible times, when a new king ascended to the throne, he usually killed or banished every member of the old king’s family. So here’s the story. Jonathan, King Saul’s son, and David, who Saul hated, were close friends. So close, they made a promise to protect each other with their lives. After Jonathan and Saul died in battle, Jonathan had one remaining son called Mephibosheth. So David had him brought to the palace, saying, ‘I will surely show you kindness for the sake of your father Jonathan. I will restore to you all the land that belonged to your grandfather Saul, and you will always eat at my table.’ David not only showed amazing commitment to his promise to Jonathan, but also kindness to someone he didn’t even know when the culture of the day was to kill or banish. To suddenly be able to meet the king, and even eat at his table, must have been a life-changing experience for Mephibosheth. Our kindness to others can be life-changing too. Even the smallest act of kindness, like an encouraging word, can change someone’s day. The Bible says: ‘Anxiety weighs down the heart, but a kind word cheers it up’ (Proverbs 12:25 NIV). Being kind should be a natural part of our lives. ‘Be kind and compassionate to one another’ (Ephesians 4:32 NIV). But we’re called to go beyond small acts of kindness. We can show even greater kindness than David. We can invite people to sit at the table of the King of Kings. By sharing the news about Jesus, we’re opening people up to the chance to come into His presence and spend time with Him. The chance to experience the greatest life-changing moment of them all.
