God of restoration (1)
Whatever life has taken from us, God can restore it. He might not give us exactly what we want, but He will give us what’s best. And even if we’ve been disobedient and come under His corrective hand, if we repent, He’ll reinstate us to a place of blessing. We might think that because we’ve wasted time and opportunities, and generally made such a mess of things, we’ve fallen beyond God’s reach. But however badly we think we’ve messed up, there’s always hope. God never forgets us and we never get so far away that we can’t get back to Him if we want to. The Bible says, ‘the Lord’s power is enough to save you. He can hear you when you ask him for help’ (Isaiah 59:1 NCV). After wasting all that he’d inherited from his father, the Prodigal Son returned home, penniless and embarrassed. All he wanted was food and a job in the servants’ quarters. But the moment he said, ‘Forgive me,’ his father called for the best robe, the fattest cow, the newest shoes, and a ring, restoring him to his rightful place as a member of the family. Even under the Old Testament law, God said, ‘If a man steals an ox or a sheep…he shall restore five oxen for an ox and four sheep for a sheep’ (Exodus 22:1 NKJV). The one who lost something gained even more back. And God will do just as much, and more, for those who have been saved through Jesus’ sacrifice on the cross! So we can go to Him today with confidence, knowing He’s a God of restoration.
What Now?
Are there any areas of your life where you’re not as close to God as you should be? Say to yourself, ‘I’m never too far away from God to turn back to Him’, then take time today to talk to Him about those areas and be ready to see His restorative power at work.
