Handling conflict with grace (1)

28 February 2022
‘There should be no arguing between you and me.’

We can learn a lot from the conflict between Abram and Lot, especially when it comes to conflict within our families and with those who are close to us. Lot had lived peacefully in his uncle Abram’s home, and Abram had taken him along on the journey of faith, when suddenly friction arose. Their growing herds of cattle were getting too big to share the same pastures, so Abram suggested they split the land between them, and offered Lot first choice. He chose the best land, leaving the rest to his uncle. Lot moved to rich, sinful Sodom, but Abram built an altar to the Lord. So: 1) Consider the facts. Abram was God’s appointed leader and Israel’s primary patriarch. God had promised him a homeland, blessing and protection, and that he would be the father of a great nation. And above all these, God promised that in him, ‘All the families of the earth will be blessed!’ (Genesis 12:3 NASB). Abram was the senior member of the family, and he had shown love and generosity to his nephew, valuing their relationship over his personal interests. Abram deserved consideration and respect from his nephew. But Lot never gave it to him. 2) Consider the point. Abram could have become angry with Lot, but he didn’t. He chose not to ‘pull rank’, or ‘insist on his rights’, or ‘show who’s boss’. He proved that we can trust God to bring justice for us. Abram chose grace over law, humility over pride, self-denial over ‘rights,’ mercy over justice, love over lust, and character over popular opinion. Even when we’ve been wronged, we can still choose the path of grace, and let God deal with the rest.

What Now?

Ask God to help you choose the path of grace, humility and mercy whenever you’re involved in a conflict or argument with someone.
