Problem-solving (5)

19 August 2019
‘A man’s heart plans his way, but the Lord directs his steps.’

Another way we can solve problems is by looking for the opportunity in them.We often think that trials, problems, and struggles are trying to break us. But God can use them to grow us, and lead us to greater things. In fact, the Bible says: ‘Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything’ (James 1:2-4 NIV). It can be challenging to approach our trials with an attitude of joy. Sometimes it’s hard to just keep going, let alone be joyful. But when we ask God to help us see the problem through His eyes, we can start to see what He’s doing in and through us. We need to search for opportunities in our problems. Opportunities to learn, to grow, to change, to glorify God, and to do something new. Problems help awaken our creativity. They can prompt us to use our God-given abilities and resources, and move forward. Without certain problems we would end up in the wrong place, with the wrong people, doing the wrong thing. The Bible says, ‘A man’s heart plans his way, but the Lord directs his steps.’ Out of pain comes purpose, and out of devastation comes direction. The problems we’re facing today could be the things that move us into our purpose in the future. So we need to talk to God about our problems and allow Him to show us the potential they hold and what He has in mind for us.

What Now?

Try looking at a problem you’re facing from God’s perspective. Can you see what He could be doing in you? Are there any opportunities to grow and change?
