At home
Our souls need a place where we’re at rest; a place where we can lay down our worries, weariness, and frustrations. David said: ‘My soul yearns, even faints, for the courts of the Lord; my heart and my flesh cry out for the living God’ (Psalm 84:2 NIV). When our soul doesn’t have a place it can call home, we can end up feeling like we’re in the wilderness. We’re not sure which way to turn, we’re thirsty for God, we don’t feel like we belong anywhere, and we think we have to do everything alone because it feels like we’ve been abandoned by God. In Psalm 107, David wrote: ‘Some wandered in desert wastelands, finding no way to a city where they could settle…Then they cried out to the Lord in their trouble, and he delivered them from their distress. He led them by a straight way to a city where they could settle’ (4-7 NIV). God knows we need a home, and He knows when our souls have tried to find their homes somewhere else. When we cry out to Him, He comes out to the wilderness and rescues us. He leads our souls back to Him. Jesus said, ‘Live in me. Make your home in me’ (John 15:4 MSG). He is the best home our souls could have. Psalm 90:1 says: ‘Lord, you have been our dwelling place throughout all generations.’ But that’s not always true for us. So often we can find ourselves dwelling in other places. We’d rather dwell in work, family, even our church serving, than in God. Those things aren’t bad things to spend time on, but we need to make sure our heart is continually dwelling in God. Our souls should be resting in Him.
