Timing, location, and purpose

03 August 2018
‘He made the entire human race and made the earth hospitable, with plenty of time and space for living so we could seek after God.’

Sometimes we can wonder why we’re here. What’s our purpose? What can we do with the time we have, the places we go and our lives in general? Firstly, it’s important to remember that God’s always wanted us; we’re no accident. He scheduled the moment of our birth, has a purpose for our lives, and we’re constantly on His mind. The Bible says: ‘You saw me before I was born. Every day of my life was recorded in your book. Every moment was laid out before a day had passed. How precious are your thoughts about me, O God’ (Psalm 139:16-17 NLT). Secondly, God’s will for us requires being in the right place; that’s why He sets boundaries. Sometimes He’ll say to us, ‘Don’t go there, I want you over here,’ or ‘Don’t stay here, I want you over there.’ We’re told that: ‘The Lord directs the steps of the godly. He delights in every detail of their lives’ (Psalm 37:23 NLT). We need to be listening to God’s voice telling us which way we should go. And we should include God in every detail of our lives and every decision we need to make. Wherever He guides us, He’ll provide for us too. Things that happen in our lives can cause us to have increased dependence on God. He wants us to depend on Him, and to seek and draw close to Him. Paul wrote: ‘Not that we are competent in ourselves to claim anything for ourselves, but our competence comes from God’ (2 Corinthians 3:5 NIV). We need God. And our life’s purpose is to get to know Him more, to follow His call, and to know that we belong to Him.

What Now?

When was the last time you spent time with God, not asking for anything for yourself but just wanting to know Him more? Spend some time like that with God today.
