Develop an overcoming attitude

17 April 2017

When we become disappointed with how life seems to be going, we can end up thinking negatively about the future. We think we can’t do things, stop taking risks, say no to opportunities that could help us grow, complain about how unfair things are and believe that there’s nothing we can do to make a difference to our situation. Basically, we lose hope. But the good news is that it doesn’t have to be like this. With practice, we can create the habit of thinking positively, even when things seem to be up against us. Here’s how: 1) Be accountable. Find someone you trust and respect, and give them the permission to tell you when you need a little more positivity in your attitude. 2) Surround yourself with positivity. Spend time with people who build up your faith, and not your fears. 3) Find a way to serve others. Helping other people creates positive feelings and gives us a sense of value. 4) Try and look for the good in every situation and expectantly believe that God will bring good from the bad. So, with practice, we can keep a hopeful and positive attitude, no matter what we’re facing. We don’t need to feel crushed by our situation, God has already overcome. ‘The one who is in you is greater than the one who is in the world.’ Paul said: ‘We’ve been surrounded and battered by troubles, but we’re not demoralised; we’re not sure what to do, but we know that God knows what to do; we’ve been spiritually terrorised, but God hasn’t left our side; we’ve been thrown down, but we haven’t broken’ (2 Corinthians 4: 8-9 MSG). With the right attitude, we can say the same.

What now?
Find a friend you can trust to be sensitive and truthful. Ask them to tell you when you’re getting a bit negative.
