Keep the fire burning

15 April 2017

After the resurrection, Jesus met two of His disciples who’d seen Him crucified and didn’t know He’d been raised from the dead. Then later as He ate supper with them at their house, an interesting thing happened: ‘Then their eyes were opened and they recognised him…they asked each other, “Were not our hearts burning within us while he talked with us on the road and opened the Scriptures to us?”’ (vv. 31-32 NIVUK). As we walk with Jesus and spend time in His presence, He talks to us and reveals Himself through what we read in the Bible. If we’re not doing these things then we can end up letting the fire burn out. And that’s something we’re warned against in the Bible. In Romans it says: ‘Don’t burn out; keep yourselves fuelled and aflame’ (12:11 MSG). If the fire does start to go out, we can end up becoming lukewarm. This happened to one of the churches in Revelation. ‘I know your deeds, that you are neither cold nor hot. I wish you were either one or the other!’ (Revelation 3:15 NIV). If we’re feeling a bit lukewarm and half-hearted in our walk with God today He is saying to us, ‘“Return to me”…“and I will return to you”’ (Zechariah 1:3 NIV). Basically: ‘Turn around and come back. You’ll find Me where you left Me.’ God is always inviting us back when we’ve walked away or lost our passion. He’s willing and ready to set our hearts on fire for Him again.

What Now?
It’s time to check your spiritual temperature. Hot, cold or lukewarm? If you’re cold or lukewarm, spend some time with God today to get that fire burning again.
