Battling bitterness

19 March 2017

When we’ve been hurt, or feel we’ve been wronged, it’s easy to let bitterness take over. The anger we feel sets bitterness into motion and the seed that’s planted grows until it takes us over. The Bible says ‘Make sure…bitterness doesn’t take root and grow up to cause trouble that corrupts many’ (Hebrews 12:15 GWT). If we deal with the bitterness as it’s planted then it can’t take root, overtake us or lead us to be ‘captive to sin’ (Acts 8:23 NIV). So how do we deal with it? The answer is: forgiveness. When we’re feeling hurt, forgiving often feels like the last thing we want to do but God wants us to forgive. ‘Forgive one another as quickly and thoroughly as God in Christ forgave you’ (Ephesians 4:32 MSG). Forgiveness is something God calls us to do, and we need to be obedient in doing it. As we forgive, we’re set free. Unforgiveness keeps us attached to the hurt, situation and person. When we forgive, we’re releasing what we’ve been holding onto so tightly and we become free. We also need to pray for our enemies. Ask God to bring to mind the people you need to forgive, and then ask Him to melt the bitterness in your heart towards them. Praying for someone makes it much harder to resent them. Sometimes it’s hard to forgive; but you ‘can do all things through Christ’ (Philippians 4:13 KJV). God will help move your heart away from bitterness and towards forgiveness.

What Now?
Eat a piece of high percentage (try at least 70%) dark chocolate. As you’re left with the bitter taste, ask God to remove any bitterness you’re holding on to.
