God’s work (1)

07 November 2016

It’s great when we’ve learned to be so in tune with God’s will and voice that we can feel sure of what He wants us to do. But discerning God’s will takes time and patience. And if we feel God asking us to do something that’s way out of our experience, it’s worth asking Him for confirmation before making any life-changing decisions. Having said that, it’s not unusual for God to give someone a job that they absolutely weren’t expecting. Amos was a shepherd when God called him to be a prophet. He had no previous experience. He didn’t even have any training. He said: ‘I’m not a professional prophet, and I was never trained to be one. I’m just a shepherd, and I take care of sycamore-fig trees’ (Amos 7:14 NLT). He faced opposition because he hadn’t followed the ‘traditional’ route towards becoming a prophet, but he had confidence because he knew he was exactly where God wanted him to be: ‘But the LORD called me away from my flock and told me, “Go and prophesy to my people in Israel”’ (v. 15 NLT). So what can we take from this? If we feel God’s calling us into something we’ve no experience of, we’ve no need to be afraid of making a change. God’s committed to your success, and He won’t give you a task that you can’t handle.

What now?
Feel like you’re being encouraged towards something, but need confirmation? Check if it’s backed up by the Bible - God won’t ask you to do anything that conflicts with what His Word teaches. Then pray about it. Ask God to make it really clear to you that it’s coming from Him.
