Refuse Fear

14 September 2016

Fear’s powerful. It can stop us doing things. It can be crippling and consuming. So how can we overcome fear? First, be prepared to take a risk and step out of your comfort zone. That can ring alarm bells for us – what if I get hurt? What if I fail or embarrass myself? These are valid questions, but by allowing ourselves the freedom to take a chance, we can beat insecurity and grow our confidence. One step out of our comfort zone at a time. ‘Fear of man will prove to be a snare, but whoever trusts in the LORD is kept safe’ (Proverbs 29:25 NIV). Secondly, learn to laugh at yourself. We can get so caught up in the trap of trying to win other people’s approval and acceptance that we worry when we make mistakes. But we’re surrounded by people who’ve made those same mistakes before. Talk it through, and chances are they'll calm you and help you see the funny side. Next, we need to widen our view. The trouble with fear and insecurity is that we often end up, unintentionally, thinking about ourselves. When we get some perspective, we see that our mistakes are usually pretty small in the grand scheme of life. Plus we can learn loads from them. Finally, treat yourself. When you have a victory over your fears, celebrate it. If you complete a project or react positively to criticism, reward yourself. Never forget that you’re valuable, talented, and skilled, and worth so much in God’s eyes. Start seeing yourself how God sees you, and you’ll find your confidence starts to replace all that fear.

What Now?
Choose a Bible verse which really reminds you of how much you’re worth in God’s eyes. Turn it into a screensaver for your phone and/or computer. Each time you see it, be encouraged by how much God values you.
