Love, Don't Judge

25 August 2016

pWe’ve all made mistakes and done things we regret. Even though we’ve been saved by God’s grace, it doesn’t mean we’re immune from making mistakes. So when you meet somebody whose lifestyle makes you uncomfortable, don’t judge them or take on a ‘holier-than-thou’ attitude. Learn as much as you can about them, and let your interactions with them get rid of any preconceptions and prejudices you might be holding on to. Learn to approach them with humility, and see them as hurting individuals loved by God - people who need the same grace you received. When you love the unlovely, you’re just doing what God did for you. The Bible makes it clear that we shouldn’t copy others in their sinful practices, so we can be tempted to think we’re better than they are. But that’s the sin of pride. Sometimes we can think that if we love and accept certain people, we somehow approve of their sin. Actually, the truth lies in remaining respectful, and accepting others the way Jesus did. Matthew 9:11-13 gives us an example: ‘When the Pharisees saw this, they asked his disciples, “Why does your teacher eat with tax collectors and sinners?” On hearing this, Jesus said, “It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick...For I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners”’ (NIV). Jesus loved and accepted people as they were, while inspiring them to a higher standard./p
