Prophecy
p1 Corinthians 14:3 tells us that prophecy is for 'strengthening, encouraging, and comfort'. Skip back two chapters and you'll see that prophecy is a gift, given by the Spirit to build up the Church. It's a major way that God reassures us that He's with us, and points out to us where He's leading us. There's so much talk in the Church today about self-help - so much so, that the guiding hand of the Father is forgotten, and knowing Christ as your teacher is rare. How do we learn to hear God's voice for the sake of strengthening, encouraging, and comforting our brothers and sisters, then?br /
We have to learn to recognise the voice of the Father. If you’re familiar with the Bible, this will be easier for you. If you’re not, it might be worth spending some time with a friend going through what it has to say about God’s character. When you know what the Father’s like, it’s easier to hear Him speak. But remember that being a believer means you can hear His voice. Jesus said, “My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me” (John 10:27 ESV). So don’t panic. You can trust that you’ll hear Him, even if it might take a bit of practice. And trust that God wants to guide others through you. It’s part of how He guides His people./p
pWhat Now?br /
Spend time alone, slowing your thoughts until you’re not distracted. Then ask God for a word for someone you know. Don’t take longer than three minutes - you don’t want to get tangled or feel pressured to make something up. Offer what you get to your friend, but make sure you tell them to test it with God themselves./p
