Knowing What Not to Say

01 July 2016

pWhenever you see a Facebook status that starts 'I don't usually do this sort of thing, but...', you know you're on for an assault on the senses. 'I'm not usually like this, but this time I just had to say something!’ The idea is that we're usually calm, level-headed people. But, this time, some ignorant so-and-so has pushed us too far. And once we've given our disclaimer, the gloves are off. We've given ourselves an excuse to go on the attack, so off we go, insulting other people, tearing whatever offensive thing they've said to shreds, inviting others to join in. The problem is, as God works with us to change our desires and motives, that sort of attitude can’t stay. ‘Just this one time’ behaviour usually shows there’s a deeper issue which will lead to more ‘just this one time’s. As you give yourself over to God, He rewires you, so that naturally, your feelings and desires no longer burst out from rage or fear. Instead, you're gentle. You're vulnerable. You're available to listen to what they've got to say first before having your say. Who knows what God might be planning for you in your future? He might have you talking to world leaders. He might have you counselling traumatised victims. Whatever your future holds, God wants to lift you up and say ‘Here’s one I trust.’ He’ll make it so that you won't have to worry about expressing your feelings, because you’ll know you can trust them./p

Trial it. Take any angry thoughts you have today and journal them, instead of speaking them./p
