Sunday
pDead to sin. Dead to death. Jesus promised what other religious leaders just couldn’t follow through on: that He’d come back from death, and while He was at it, bring His followers back from death. By doing that, He was showing that death has lost its guts. It’s got nothing over people who trust in Him.br /
So how do we actually know that’s gonna happen? I mean, Jesus came back from the dead that Sunday, sure. But that could be a one-off (He’s a special case anyway, being God and that). Here’s how. He’s already made (we’d reckon) a decent deposit on His promise: there’s this overlooked little verse in Matthew, and what it says is pretty nuts. Right when He died, ‘Graves were opened; and many bodies of the saints who had fallen asleep were raised … they went into the holy city and appeared to many’ (Matthew 27:52-53 NKJV). Right? Right?? Because Jesus died, corpses got up. This was a moment when God gave a brief preview of what was coming for all of His people, essentially saying: hey guys, this isn’t a metaphor. So when we’re unsure about what the future holds, and when the danger of this world gets us anxious, we’ve got this promise underlined and bolded and italicised. His resurrection guarantees ours./p
