Dead Appetites

15 March 2016

pEver get that thing when you don’t realise how hungry you are until you see a big-time burger or whopping mountain of pasta? And then suddenly you’re like, ‘Huh, yeah, I’m actually pretty hungry.’ It’s like that with God. When we first meet Him, we realise that He’s what we need, and that becomes desire. We start longing for Him. This is what happened with the writer of the psalm you read today. Have a close look at verse three. This writer loved God for who He is, not for what He can bring. Maybe he started off by wanting God for something that He could give him, like protection, or family. But then something changed. The writer started to desire God for who He is.br /
If you’ve never felt that hunger, then there might be a few things going on. Take a look at what you’re feeding yourself. It might be that you’re ruining your appetite for God by gorging on other, smaller things that you don’t need. Like wanting too much (or the wrong type) of things that were made to be good. Because those sorts of things are designed to be good things, we can ‘satisfy’ our appetite on them, leaving no appetite left for God. Kinda like gorging on a bag of gummy bears before dinner: it’ll fill you up, but it’ll stop you wanting the stuff you actually need./p
pWhat now?br /
The good news is that you *can* work up an appetite for God. Try a new Bible-reading habit. After you’ve read your Bible, rather than jumping into ‘me’ prayers, turn the passages you’ve read into praise. Lay out God’s qualities before Him, one by one./p
