God Guidance - Listening
pLet’s say that we’ve taken yesterday’s advice on board, and clambered over our discomfort to ask God to guide us. What then…?br /
Well, listening. There’s no point in asking the question if we’re not ready to listen. And it’s a process that takes practice. Take a look at 1 Samuel 3. God called Samuel twice, and he went into Eli (his sort of mentor figure) thinking that it was him who was calling. It took a third time from God, *and* some advice from Eli on responding to God, for Samuel to even twig that it was God speaking to him. From there, he got an epic message. So, the lesson? It. Takes. Practice. It’s all about consistently taking the time to say, ‘Speak, LORD, for Your servant hears’ (1 Samuel 3:9, NKJV).br /
Now, on from that Old Testament incident, it’s worth saying that God still speaks. To you. Yup. Not always with a booming voice, but He most definitely is still 100% interested in communicating with us. That’s what shapes us. A really good place to start listening for that Voice is Scripture. Even if God isn’t speaking to you audibly/visibly/in any heart-stopping way today, He *is* speaking to you through His Word, that was written down centuries ago. The Bible is always there, and it’s always ready to be heard, in your situation, at any time. It’s a great place to begin to build (or re-build) that openness to hearing God speak, after having asked Him to./p
pWhat now?br /
Try memorising bits of the Bible. Don’t know where to start? The Sermon on the Mount is a good place. Then, in future, see how God brings different bits back to mind when situations need them./p
