Keys to Bible study (3)

06 January 2018
‘Everyone who hears these words of mine.’ Matthew 7:24 NIV

Studying the Bible helps us to become more dependent on God and to give us the right approach to life. But sometimes we can be tempted to study for the wrong reasons. People mainly read the Bible for three reasons: 1) To find texts that support our views. But when we do this, we can end up taking a verse out of context just because it backs up what we think. Then we’re in danger of misinterpreting the Bible’s message. We should allow God’s Word to change the way we think, not use it to back up our existing views and opinions. 2) To find promises that apply to our particular needs. When we’re struggling, finding a verse that offers us hope and support can be very encouraging. But we should be turning to the Bible all the time, not only when we’re facing challenges. Some of the promises may also have conditions attached, and if we take the promise on its own without looking at the whole picture, we’re in danger of misinterpreting the Bible again. 3) To discover principles to live by. We should all aim to be in this third group. Jesus said, ‘Everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock’ (Matthew 7:24 NIV). When storms came, the wise man’s house stood firm while the foolish man’s – the one who didn’t practise what he knew – came crashing down. Pharisees could quote Old Testament law for hours. But Jesus said they were like beautifully painted gravestones: filled with dead men’s bones (take a look at Matthew 23:27). Added knowledge brings added responsibility. So when we study the Bible, we need to be prepared to apply that knowledge too.

What now?
