‘Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path.’ Psalm 119:105 NIV

When we’ve got decisions to make it can feel like we’re stumbling in the dark. We’re unsure which path to take, the unknowns seem scary and we can’t see which way to go. And when these decisions are life-changing, the pressure seems even worse. What we need is God’s light so that we can see the way forward. And when we get to the point of crying out ‘Lord, what should I do?’, He responds to us in a number of ways. Firstly, He can direct us through the Bible. The Psalmist wrote, ‘Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path’ (Psalm 119: 105 NIV). Without a regular daily intake of God’s Word, we’ll be ‘in the dark’ as to what’s best for us and the direction our lives should go. So we need to make sure we’re turning to it first, rather than using it as our last resort. And when God uses Scripture to guide us, we can be sure that what He says to us will happen. ‘I the Lord will speak what I will, and it shall be fulfilled’ (Ezekiel 12:25 NIV). The Bible also reminds us that God gives us wisdom and discernment in order to make decisions. We may not receive a clear word from Him about what to do, but He’ll give us the discernment we need to work it out. Sometimes it takes time to find the light in the darkness and to figure out which way we should go, but during that time of searching we need to keep trusting God and remembering all those times He’s directed us before because He’s faithful. ‘Not one word has failed of all the good promises he gave’ (1 Kings 8:56 NIV).
