Giant slayers

26 November 2022
‘This is the Lord’s battle, and he will give you to us!’

If we're going to slay giants like addiction, resentment, fear, lust, pride, envy, or anger, we need to keep three Scriptures in mind:

1) ‘The temptations in your life are no different from what others experience’ (1 Corinthians 10:13 NLT). Goliath was born a baby, but he grew into a giant. Our giants are often little sins we overlooked and indulged until they assumed a life of their own and came back to haunt us. So as we begin to say no to small impulses and temptations, we'll gradually grow the strength to say no to bigger ones.

2) ‘As Goliath moved closer to attack, David quickly ran out to meet him’ (1 Samuel 17:48 NLT). David faced Goliath head-on. We need to pull our giants out into the light, and not let them back into our lives by setting boundaries. This might mean we need to find a trusted friend who can strengthen and encourage us, and hold us accountable. It's tough, but sometimes we need backup when facing an especially stubborn and strong giant. Above all, we shouldn't view God in the light of our problem; we should view our problem in the light of God.

3) ‘This is the Lord’s battle, and he will give you to us!’ We’re not in the fight alone. God wants to help us overcome old, unhelpful habits and replace them with new, good behaviours. His will for us is that we would ‘live in a way that is worthy of the people God has chosen to be his own’ (Ephesians 4:1 CEV). When we repent (which means to do a 180-degree turn, and resolve to walk with God), He'll give us the strength and resources to conquer the giant we’re facing. God has never lost a battle yet, and when we invite Him to join in our battles, we'll win.

What Now?

Have you invited God to help you with the giant you’re facing? Today, make some time to ask for His help and strength.
