Hold on to your vision

23 November 2022
‘Where there is no vision, the people perish.’

God has a plan for your life. To help you see what’s truly important, He gives you a ‘vision’. Having a vision is like being an athlete whose focus is winning. They need to eliminate distractions, train hard, and keep their minds clearly fixed on their goal Eugene Peterson describes ‘vision’ this way: ‘If people can’t see what God is doing, they stumble all over themselves; but when they attend to what he reveals, they are most blessed’ (v.18 MSG).

When God gives you a vision, you begin to see things as He sees them. Moses ‘saw’ the promised land while everybody around him saw only wilderness and wanted to give up and return to Egypt (see Hebrews 11:24-27). And he understood that he’d get there in God’s timing, according to God’s plan, one step at a time. If your vision feels overwhelming, break it down into small, manageable steps. You'll be surprised at the progress you can make when you go steadily. But until you take the first step, a vision is just a daydream.

A British clergyman named Frederick Langbridge wrote, ‘Two men looked out from prison bars. One saw mud, the other stars.’ So what do you see in your future? It's important to remember that God won't usually just hand us success with no effort. We need to energise our visions with faith and give them momentum through hard work. After the disciples had worked all night and caught no fish, Jesus told them to ‘launch out into the deep’ (Luke 5:4 KJV). When they obeyed, they got their biggest catch ever! Don't give up on you vision – keep pushing towards it, and watch what amazing things God will do.
