Nobody else's path
Israel had become steeped in idolatry and ungodliness. So when Josiah became king, he decided to cleanse Israel of pagan influences and began rebuilding the temple. That's when a priest discovered some long-lost scrolls containing God’s Word. As Josiah heard what they said, he realised just how far his people had drifted from God. So he asked the prophetess Huldah what would become of the people. She told him that as he had repented when he heard God’s Word, his nation would be spared while he lived (see v.14-27).
An entire generation received grace because of one man's faith and integrity. And Josiah had a lot to overcome. His grandfather, Manasseh, had filled Jerusalem ‘from one end to the other with innocent blood’ (2 Kings 21:16 NLT). And Josiah’s father died at the hands of his own officers. ‘He did what was wrong’, is most likely what his epitaph says. Josiah was only eight years old when he became king. Immediately he chose righteousness and didn’t stop doing what was right all his life.
So what can we learn from his story? First, you can’t pick your family, but you can pick your role models. ‘Follow God’s example, therefore, as dearly loved children’ (Ephesians 5:1 NIV). Second, you can’t change your past, but you can rise above it. You have a say in your life, you have a voice in your destiny, and you have a choice in the path you take. Third, one person can make a huge difference when they have God behind them. Your path is uniquely yours. Don't try to follow anyone else's. Choose the path God shows you, and be ready for some amazing things to spring up as a result of your obedience.
What now?
Is there anything you’ve done in the past that you’re not proud of now? Today, spend some time thanking God that your past doesn’t define your future, and ask Him to help you get back on His unique path for you.
