Selah: ‘Pause and calmly think about it’
Seventy-one times in the book of Psalms we read the word ‘Selah’ at the end of a Scripture. What does it mean? To ‘pause and calmly think about it’.
We can’t rush into Bible revelation. We can’t just skim the surface and still discover the treasure hidden deep within it. That’s why David wrote, ‘With all my heart I try to obey you. Don’t let me break your commands. I have taken your words to heart so I would not sin against you’ (Psalm 119:10-11 NCV).
When we hide God’s Word in our hearts through meditation and memorisation, we’re able to recall it and stand on it when we have a particular need. Meditation involves taking time to reflect; to ‘pause and calmly think about it’. It’s a tried and tested strategy that God’s put in place for us. He wants us to learn to pray the Scriptures and meditate on them because these habits will help us experience all He has for us.
The most important thing we can ask ourselves when life throws us challenges is, ‘What does God say about this in His Word?’ Why is this such an important question to ask? Because: ‘[God’s] word is settled in heaven’ (Psalm 119:89 NKJV), and ‘The word of our God stands forever’ (Isaiah 40:8 NKJV). God’s Word is His will. It's unchanging, eternal truthful, full of the best wisdom, and won't let us down.
When God called Jeremiah to leadership, Jeremiah was unsure of his ability, so God said, ‘I have put My words in your mouth’ (Jeremiah 1:9 NKJV). Then He told Jeremiah, ‘I am ready to perform My word’ (v.12 NKJV). The only thing we can rely on and be absolutely certain of is that God will keep His Word. Selah!
