Choices

12 September 2017
‘For as in Adam all die, so in Christ all will be made alive.’ 1 Corinthians 15:22 NIV

Every day, we’re faced with lots of opportunities to make the right choice. The choice to do what Jesus would do in that situation. The choice that’ll bring us closer to His nature. Sometimes we might not really realise we’re facing that choice - ever avoided that person in church who’s always on their own? Ever ignored an opportunity to pray with someone who’s going through a difficult time because you don’t want to get involved in their troubles? It’s so difficult to constantly make the godly choice. And God understands that - in Romans 3:23, Paul says, ‘everyone has sinned and fallen short of God’s glorious standard’ (NCV). We all inherited a sinful nature when Adam made the decision to disobey God and eat the forbidden fruit. Adam’s choice brought death into the world. (Take a look at what God said to Adam in Genesis 2:17, and the consequences of Adam’s decision in Genesis 3:19.) That’s why in 1 Corinthians 15:22, we’re told, ‘in Adam all die’ (NIV). But it goes on to say, ‘in Christ all will be made alive’. Jesus’ death on the cross means we can all have eternal life when we choose to follow Him. And when we resolve to draw closer to Him, each day a little more of our sinful nature trickles away and gets replaced by Christ’s faithful, spiritual nature that desires to obey God’s will. As we invite God into our daily life and get deeper into His Word, all those decisions we have to make will get easier, because we’ll be more and more aware of His will and our desire will be for the godly choices.
