Speak up

‘She also gave some to her husband, who was with her, and he ate it.’ Genesis 3:6 NIV

In Genesis, before God created Eve, He warned Adam not to eat the forbidden fruit, and it was Adam's responsibility to pass this message on to Eve. Later, the devil suggested to Eve that she should disobey God’s command and eat the fruit. The Bible tells us: ‘When the woman saw that the fruit of the tree was good...She also gave some to her husband, who was with her, and he ate it’ (Genesis 3:6 NIV). Notice that the Bible says that Adam was ‘with her’? He must’ve had an opportunity to speak out when he saw Eve doing something wrong, but instead he went along with it and joined her in disobeying God. They both had a choice, and they both had the free will to make that choice. Eve could have chosen to reject Satan’s words and trust God. Adam could have spoken out and said, ‘That’s not right. Unless we follow the path that God’s laid out for us, we’ll lose everything.’ But neither of them took that choice, and their decision had massive repercussions, not only for themselves, but also for their descendants. One of the things we can learn from this story is the importance of speaking up when we see someone going against God’s Word. James says, ‘if someone among you wanders away from the truth and is brought back, you can be sure that whoever brings the sinner back from wandering will save that person from death and bring about the forgiveness of many sins’ (James 5:19-20 NLT). Our intervention can help to turn a situation around and bring our friends and loved ones back to Christ. And when we speak out against something, we’re less likely to be tempted into following that wrong behaviour.
