Pursue your dream (2)

04 September 2017
‘Here comes that dreamer.’ Genesis 37:19 NCV

When Joseph dreamed big dreams, this is how his brothers responded: ‘They said to each other, “Here comes that dreamer. Let’s kill him...then we will see what will become of his dreams”’ (Genesis 37:19-20 NCV). The Bible tells us about Joseph's dreams in Genesis 37:7 and 37:9. In the first dream, he saw himself and his brothers binding bundles of wheat, when his brothers’ bundles bowed down to his. When he told his brothers, ‘they hated him all the more’ (v. 8 NIV). Then he dreamed of his father, mother and brothers (represented by as the sun, moon and stars) bowing down to him. Joseph told his father about it, and ‘his father scolded him’ (v. 10), because it seemed like Joseph was being disrespectful to his parents in dreaming of them bowing to him. However, ‘his father wondered what the dreams meant’ (v.11 NLT). His father understood that sometimes God speaks to us through dreams, so he didn’t dismiss them. But his brothers either didn’t recognise the dreams as coming from God, or maybe they just didn't like the idea of one of their youngest brothers having authority over them, even if the authority was God-given. When God gives us a dream, those around us can have similar reactions. Probably not as extreme as wanting to kill us, but they might resent us for having big dreams or they might try to stop us from achieving them. Sometimes that’s because they want to protect us. But sometimes it’s because they don't recognise that it’s come from God and they’re jealous of our ideas and goals. But with God’s help we can still fulfil it. The plotting of Joseph’s brothers didn’t stop God's plan from working out, and that means if He gives us a dream and we say yes to Him, He won’t let anything stop us.
