Feeling Overwhelmed (5)

20 December 2016

When we’re feeling completely overwhelmed by the situation we’re facing, it’s really easy for us to lose perspective and let our thoughts exaggerate the negative. This happened to Elijah when Queen Jezebel threatened to kill him. When he felt like his problems were too big to handle, he started believing that the whole world was against him, when in fact, only one person opposed him. Only Jezebel had made threats against him. But instead of stopping to realistically evaluate the situation, Elijah ran away. In reality, he wasn’t the only person still faithful to God. There were seven thousand other prophets who hadn’t succumbed to pagan religion (v. 18 NIV), but Elijah exaggerated the problem and ended up sinking lower than ever. And in the midst of his depression, he also forgot that he had God’s protection. Up to that point, he’d trusted God, and God hadn’t left him to face things on his own. Elijah had no reason to think that God would leave him now. So when we’re facing huge challenges, the first thing to do is remember that God’s got everything under control and we can trust Him. And when we remember that, it’ll help us to keep things in perspective and see the reality of the situation we’re in - the way God sees it.

What now?
Get out your piece of paper and re-read everything you’ve written over the last few days. Then take it all to God. Ask Him to help you see the situation or task from His perspective, and put all your trust in Him. Then, go ahead and face that situation with confidence.
