Which way?

‘Stand at the crossroads and look; ask for the ancient paths, ask where the good way is, and walk in it.’

How many times do we end up at a crossroads in life? We’ve come so far along a certain path, but then we have options. Do we apply for that job? Do we date that person? Do we move to that city? Do we spend time with those people we know aren’t a good influence on us? Every day we face so many decisions, big and small, which can feel overwhelming. For some we might know the right thing to do, for others we might wonder which way we should go. In Jeremiah 6, God was telling the Israelites to make the right choice: ‘Stand at the crossroads and look; ask for the ancient paths, ask where the good way is, and walk in it.’ This verse gives us some great advice for when we face decisions. Firstly, we have to ‘stand at the crossroads and look’. We can easily rush into decisions, thinking we know exactly what to do. We don’t look at all the available options and we fail to weigh up the possible consequences of our decision. We need to pause and take some time to think carefully. Secondly, we need to ask. This might mean we need to ask others for their advice, but the best person we can ask is God. He can give us wisdom and guidance in our decisions. The Bible says: ‘If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you’ (James 1:5 NIV). When we feel we know what God wants us to do, we need to then ‘walk in it’. We need to put aside what we want to do, and follow the right and godly path that God wants us to go on.

What Now?

Are you at a crossroads in life? Take the advice in Jeremiah 6:16 by stopping to think, asking for God’s wisdom, and then walking the way He tells you.
