Don’t give up (1)

18 November 2019
‘If I still wanted to please people, I would not be a servant of Christ.’

When we’ve figured out what God has called us to do, stepped out of our comfort zone and made a start, we can reach a point where we feel like giving up. There are a number of reasons why we might reach that stage, and we’re going to take a look at them over the next few days. Firstly, we can be stopped by pride and comparison. When we’re working for God, we can be tempted to look around at what other people are doing. We might prefer their calling to ours. Perhaps they get to lead worship while we're welcoming people to church. Or perhaps they’re called to preach to thousands, while we’re called to share our faith with a few friends. We start thinking we’re better than the calling we’ve been given. We want something which is more visible, more appreciated, and more rewarding. When we start to feel like this, we need to ask God to humble us. When we’re full of pride, we end up serving for our own glory, not the glory of God. But the Bible says: ‘Humble yourselves, therefore, under God’s mighty hand, that he may lift you up in due time’ (1 Peter 5:6 NCV). Sometimes we can think that people who have a similar calling to us are doing a much better job than we are, and it can make us feel like giving up. But God’s made each of us to be different. We all have a part to play in bringing His kingdom to earth. The Bible says that ‘God has made us what we are. In Christ Jesus, God made us to do good works’ (Ephesians 2:10 NCV). So let’s refuse to let pride and comparison stop us from fulfilling our God-given purpose.

What Now?

Next time you feel like you’d rather have a different calling from God, ask Him to open your eyes to the importance your calling has in His kingdom.
