Who we are
Peter the apostle started out as Peter the fisherman. His father owned a fleet of fishing boats, and Peter probably thought that one day he’d end up running the family business. But God had a different plan for him. God has a unique plan for each one of us too. It’s a plan which might not match up with the one we’ve created for ourselves, but it is one that will be the best for us. To understand and fulfil it, we need to be ‘born again’ (John 3:7 NKJV). Jesus said at the grave of Lazarus, ‘I am the resurrection and the life. The one who believes in me will live, even though they die’ (John 11:25 NIV). And Jesus, who raised Lazarus from the dead, can bring us to life spiritually too. There’s a lot more to life than passing exams, working for years, and retiring with as much money as possible. In the Bible we see this interaction between Jesus and Peter: ‘He pressed them, ‘And how about you? Who do you say I am?’ Simon Peter said, “You’re the Christ, the Messiah, the Son of the living God.” Jesus came back, “God bless you, Simon…You didn’t get that answer out of books or from teachers. My Father in heaven…let you in on this…now I’m going to tell you who youare, really are”’ (vv.15-18 MSG). When we discover who Jesusis and what He has done for us, we discover who weare and what He has called us to do for Him. The more we understand and know Him, the more we’ll understand and know ourselves. If we seek Him, He’ll tell us who we really are.
Sit in a quiet place where you won’t be distracted. Then ask God who He says you are. Write down anything you feel Him saying to you.
