Don’t give up

09 August 2019
‘Stand firm. Let nothing move you. Always give yourselves fully to the work of the Lord.’

When we’re working for God and not seeing any progress, reward, or appreciation, it can be tempting to give up. We might feel like we’re working for no reason, or even that we must have misheard the call of God because it doesn’t seem to be working out. We might face opposition from others which makes us feel discouraged. But the Bible says: ‘Stand firm. Let nothing move you. Always give yourselves fully to the work of the Lord.’ We can’t let what we see around us, our own emotions and thoughts, or the opinions of others move us from what God’s called us to do. Nehemiah had to overcome opposition when he was rebuilding the walls of Jerusalem (you can read about it in Nehemiah 4). But he remained strong, and finished the rebuilding that he was called to do. And that’s what we need to do too. We should keep going and refuse to give up, even when opposition is coming from all sides. The Bible also says: ‘We must not become tired of doing good. We will receive our harvest of eternal life at the right time if we do not give up’ (Galatians 6:9 NCV). We might not see the results of our good work right now, but our reward is in heaven. And God sees everything we do for Him; He doesn’t forget our work. In Hebrews we’re told: ‘God is fair; he will not forget the work you did and the love you showed for him by helping his people. And he will remember that you are still helping them’ (Hebrews 6:10 NCV). We may not ever receive praise or appreciation from people, but we’re not called to please people. We’re called to follow God. So let’s refuse to give up.

What Now?

Choose a task you have to do today. Keep going on the task until it is finished, don’t give up or get distracted. Afterwards, ask God to help you keep going on His work too.
