Be patient

13 January 2019
‘Don’t try to get out of anything prematurely. Let it do its work so you become mature and well-developed.’

When we’re going through difficult times, or we feel like we’re just not moving forwards, it can be hard to remember that God’s working in us. The truth is, we’re closer than we know to becoming the person God wants us to be. By His grace, we’ll make it through the trials we’re facing and come out stronger and wiser. Paul says, ‘If God is for us, who can be against us?’ (Romans 8:31 NIV). God is for us. That means we can do the things we’re afraid we can’t do. God can help us take down the walls and barriers we’ve put up in our minds which stop us from getting anywhere. God wants to set us free from the fearful attitudes that have held us back for so long; He wants to release us to live up to our full potential. The right attitude can overcome almost any barrier. It may feel like we’ve been trying to overcome things, and break down barriers, for so long. We can be tempted to give up, believing that we’re never going to make it through to the other side. But the Bible reminds us that we need to be patient and allow God to work in us. ‘Don’t try to get out of anything prematurely. Let it do its work so you become mature and well-developed.’ Often, the things we think are overcoming us are the things we end up overcoming and glorifying God through. They’re the things that make us who we are. They grow things in us, strengthen us, and encourage others. In Romans it says, ‘suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope’ (5:3-4 NIV). So let’s be patient; it will take us time to get there. But anything worthwhile is worth working for.

What Now?

Book a treat for yourself for a few months’ time. It could be anything from a meal out with a friend to a day trip to your favourite place. As you’re waiting for that day to come, ask God to help you patiently wait while He works in you.
