Desire for God
The Bible says, ‘Love the Lord…with all your heart’ (Deuteronomy 6:5 NIV). ‘Trust in the Lord with all your heart’ (Proverbs 3:5 NIV). ‘You will…find me when you seek me with all your heart’ (Jeremiah 29:13 NIV). The key word here is ‘all’. And the question is, do we love the Lord with all our hearts? Are we trusting Him with all our hearts? Are we seeking Him with all our hearts? It can be easy to let other things into our hearts. We become distracted with work, family, even serving in the church. We give God the time we have leftover; we turn to Him as our last resort when the things we do to try and cope don’t work. We can end up loving Him when times are great, and being disappointed and disillusioned when times are bad. In the good times, as well as the bad, we need to be praying and reading the Bible regularly. It’s in those times that we hear God’s promises to us. For example, in Isaiah 41, He says: ‘I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand’ (v.10 NIV). By soaking in God’s promises we can keep going when we’re tempted to give up. We can keep loving God when things seem to be constantly coming up against us. We can keep trusting God to bring us through and work things for our good. We can keep seeking God when we can’t seem to see beyond our situation. Whether we’re exhausted by our victories or discouraged by our defeats, let’s allow God to draw us back to Himself. We need to let Him revive a desire within us to be all He wants us to be.
