You belong to God
When God told Moses He was going to use him to rescue the Israelites from slavery, the conversation went like this: ‘“So now, go. I am sending you to Pharaoh to bring my people the Israelites out of Egypt.” But Moses said to God, “Who am I, that I should go to Pharaoh and bring the Israelites out of Egypt?” And God said, “I will be with you”’ (vv.10-12 NIV). Moses summarised his fears and insecurities in one question, ‘Who am I?’ But that’s the wrong question. It’s not about who we are, but Whose we are. It’s important to know our identity in Christ, but it’s even more important to know that we belong to Him. To know His identity, and what that means for us. That day, God revealed His name to Moses as ‘I AM.’ His name is the solution to every problem and the answer to every question. His name calms every fear, answers every prayer, and wins every battle. At His name, angels bow and the enemy has to leave. At His name, our sin is forgiven. God has chosen to accomplish His purposes through ordinary people like us. But we can be like Moses. We’re afraid of stepping out in faith in case we fail. We say to God ‘Who am I, that I should go?’ We think we’re not good enough, that we’ve done too many things wrong, and that we don’t have the right skills. It might seem impossible for us, but it’s not impossible for God. When we know who God is, and trust that we belong to Him, we can stand on His promise: ‘I will be with you,’ and step out into all the things God’s calling us to do.
