When God said to Solomon ‘ask for whatever you want me to give you’ (1 Kings 3:5 NIV), Solomon must have had a lot going through his mind. What should he ask for? He chose something many of us may not have even considered asking for. He chose wisdom. Solomon said: ‘Give your servant a discerning heart to govern your people and to distinguish between right and wrong’ (1 Kings 3:9 NIV). God was pleased that Solomon had asked for wisdom rather than asking for wealth or a long life, in fact He was so pleased that He gave Solomon these as added extras. And Solomon’s wisdom came in useful when two women came to him, both claiming to be a child’s mother. Solomon was able to determine the real mother and solve the dispute. How often do we ask God for wisdom? The book of Proverbs, full of Solomon’s wisdom, is dedicated to giving us wisdom, and also to showing us the importance of seeking it. In chapter 3, we’re told: ‘Blessed are those who find wisdom, those who gain understanding, for she is more profitable than silver and yields better returns than gold. She is more precious than rubies; nothing you desire can compare with her’ (Proverbs 3:13-15 NIVUK). Finding wisdom doesn’t need to be a hard challenge. We can read the Bible and also ask God for His wisdom. The Bible says: ‘The wisdom that comes from heaven is first of all pure; then peace-loving, considerate, submissive, full of mercy and good fruit, impartial and sincere (James 3:17 NIV). So let’s go to God for the wisdom we need.
