Disappointment (1)
For the next few days, let’s look at five different types of disappointment and how best to handle them. First, disappointment in yourself. This is the most debilitating type. Peter experienced it. He swore loyalty to Christ saying, ‘Everyone else may abandon you but not me. I’m yours until death!’ (See Matthew 26:33.) But he still denied Jesus three times. Later he remembered Jesus’ words: ‘Before the rooster crows, you will disown me three times’ (Matthew 26:34 NIV). Peter was heartbroken by his failure, and ‘went outside and wept bitterly’ (Luke 22:62 NIV).
Is that how you feel today? Are you asking God, 'How could You possibly use someone like me?’ Jesus wasn’t shocked by Peter. He was well aware of Peter’s flaws when He called him. But He also knew this outspoken disciple had a tender heart, so He held out the hand of grace to Peter. After His resurrection, when Jesus gave the order to ‘tell his disciples and Peter’ to meet Him in Galilee, He reaffirmed His choice of His failed disciple (see Mark 16:7).
The rest of Peter’s story is one of victory. So when you sin, or fail and disappoint yourself, what should you do? 1) Confess and repent. Don't excuse, rationalise, or blame the circumstances or other people. God already knows everything about you, so He won't be shocked. 2) Receive God’s grace and forgiveness. Don’t let Satan convince you that you’re beyond God’s reach. Because you’re not, and you never will be. 3) Don’t let feelings of disappointment drag you into hopelessness and despair. God doesn't see you as hopeless, and He won't give up on you. 4) Get whatever help you need to get back on track – sooner, rather than later.
What Now?
Read through Peter’s story of betraying Jesus and later being forgiven by Him, then talk to God about any disappointment you feel about yourself or areas where you feel you’ve failed Him. Be open to receiving His forgiveness, because He will give it readily.
