Money-wise

12 August 2022
‘There is desirable treasure…in the dwelling of the wise.’

God’s Word says there are two things we should do with our money.

1) Sow some. The Bible says, ‘Whoever sows generously will also reap generously’ (2 Corinthians 9:6 NIV). We shouldn't let any fears of not having enough stop us giving when He prompts us, because when we give God a seed to work with, He'll turn it into a harvest when we need it. His ability to provide isn't limited by anything. This is what Isaac did: ‘There was a famine in the land…Then Isaac sowed in that land, and reaped in the same year a hundredfold; and the Lord blessed him’ (Genesis 26:1, 12 NKJV). We can be confident that at the right time, in the right way, and in the right places, God will meet our needs. Knowing that we can trust Him gives us freedom to be generous when He asks us to give.

2) Save some. There is desirable treasure, and oil in the dwelling of the wise. But a foolish man squanders it’ (Proverbs 21:20 NKJV). We're bombarded by adverts that imply we need the latest product to have a great life. But we can live happily without most of the stuff we see. So before buying something that's not actually a necessity, pray. Just because we can afford something doesn’t mean God approves. Joseph instructed Pharaoh: ‘Gather all the food of those good years that are coming…Then that food shall be as a reserve for…seven years of famine’ (Genesis 41:35-36 NKJV). Joseph saved when he had something to spare, so there would be provision for the leaner times. And we should try to do that too. That doesn't mean we can't treat ourselves occasionally, but let's make sure God’s involved in every penny we give, save, and spend.

What Now?

Whenever you’re thinking of buying something this week, stop and ask God first if it’s the right time and the right thing to buy.
