Our Story
Back in the 80s, UCB was really just a dream. A group of faithful volunteers armed with a big vision from God, and a borrowed typewriter in a spare bedroom, began to dream and work towards the UK having its very own national Christian radio station. There was a limited budget, no building and (back then) no national radio licenses for national religious broadcasters so it seemed completely impossible.
There were times when the vision seemed too big, when bills piled up, and doors stayed firmly closed but then came one of those unmistakable ‘God moments’ - a small brown envelope arriving in the post with a cheque inside that changed everything. It was just enough to keep the dream alive, and a reminder that when God gives a promise, He always provides what’s needed to bring it to life.
Since 1986, UCB has been changing lives for good through the power of God’s Word. Here’s how the story unfolded:
UCB’s Vision Begins
Ian Mackie, UCB’s founder, receives two promises from God: that the UK would one day have a national Christian radio station, and that a great move of God was coming to the UK. UCB launches its first broadcasts from Manx Radio studios on the Isle of Man.
Partnership with Bob Gass
UCB meets Bob Gass at a Christian Resources Exhibition, leading to the creation of the UCB Word for Today, which becomes one of the UK’s most-read devotionals.
Broadcasting Law Changes
After years of campaigning, the law changes, enabling UCB to be heard nationally via satellite TV.
UCB Prayerline Launches
UCB Prayerline is introduced, offering daily telephone prayer support for anyone in need.
OneHope Partnership Begins
UCB partners with OneHope, distributing Bible-based resources to children and young people across the UK.
UCB 2 Launches
UCB 2, a second radio station, expands onto national DAB radio.
National DAB Broadcasting
UCB 1 begins broadcasting nationally on DAB radio, fulfilling the original vision.
Digital Expansion
UCB Player app launches, making radio, podcasts, and devotionals accessible on demand.
25th Anniversary of Word for Today
Over 400,000 readers receive the devotional in print or digitally.
Spark App Launches
UCB Spark, a video-based devotional app for children, launches.
UCB Kingdom Academy Expands
The Kingdom Academy offers accredited courses and workshops in media, music, mission, management, and ministry.
40th Anniversary and UK Tour
UCB celebrates 40 years with a national tour, new media centre, and a renewed call to see the UK revived by God’s power.
