God’s Greatness (1)

‘In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.’ Genesis 1:1 NKJV

There are still thousands of questions about the world around us that our scientific knowledge hasn't been able to get close to answering yet. Scientists look closely at our world to try and understand the rules that govern it and keep it all working. But God, as the Creator of the world, knows the answers. In Job 26:7, we read: ‘God stretches the northern sky out over empty space and hangs the earth on nothing’ (NCV). The book of Job was written around 1,000 years before Christ was born, possibly more, but definitely long before science had proved that the earth is suspended in space, held by the gravitational pull of the sun. Many people at the time thought that the earth rested on the back of a giant elephant or turtle. How could the earth just float there? But that’s one of the amazing things about God – He can do things that go far beyond our understanding. Jeremiah 32:17 says, ‘you have made the heavens and the earth by your great power and outstretched arm. Nothing is too hard for you’ (NIV). Things can seem impossible to us, but they’re not impossible for God. So what does this mean for us? It means that when we’re facing a tough situation and can’t see a way out, we can confidently ask God to help us, knowing He already knows the answer and can see the best way to help us. No problem is too difficult for Him. We may not understand at the time how He’s working, but when we look back, we can see the amazing ways He works things out according to His plan, and ultimately for our good.

What now?
Think back over things that have happened in your life that you didn’t understand at the time. Can you see where God was at work in them now?
