TODAY'S WORD 4U 2DAY
BE WISE (2)GENESIS 33:13
‘…If [you]…overdrive them…[they] will die.’ GENESIS 33:13 KJV
Today’s a “Spot the Difference!” reading. Esau and Jacob were pretty different brothers (with a relationship history that’d have made Liam and Noel jealous), who were getting together to celebrate a record number of years without breaking each others’ faces.
Esau had a bit of a get-to-it attitude, telling his brother and his family: “...let us go...” (v12 NKJV), but Jacob held back, knowing the family he had brought with him needed to rest: “You go on ahead!...” – why? Jacob explained to Esau: ‘…The children are weak, and the flocks and herds which are nursing are with me…if the men should drive them hard…the flock will die…I will lead on slowly at a pace…the livestock…and the children, are able to endure…’ (13-14 NKJV). Jacob wasn’t snubbing his already-strained relationship with his brother for no good reason, he was being realistic about his own peoples’ abilities to cope, he was keeping things in balance. Jacob refused to take on too much (even if it seemed the best way forward at the time) and risk neglecting his family and straining the weaker ones who depended on him.
What about me then? Well, are you being wise with where you put your energy? Or with the pace you’re going at? Are you moving too quickly to spend proper time with your family, or your friends that need you? Or are you the sort who likes to push things along (not that that’s always wrong!), but right now you’re pushing someone too hard? The Bible steps in with this: ‘Don’t look out only for your own interests, but take an interest in others too.’ Philippians 2:1-4 (NLT). God’s priorities are people.
Jacob’s a really key figure in our history, and a fascinating case study of someone having a rocky, but never abandoned, relationship with God. Give him a (big, long, but worth it!) read in Genesis 25:19 - 35:29.
