TODAY'S WORD 4U 2DAY
KINGDOM CULTURE (1)ROMANS 12.2
‘Don’t become so well-adjusted to your culture that you fit into it without... thinking...’ (TM)
The first Christians knew where they stood. They knew they were a different sort of people to those around them, not just on the surface, but deep down. They had the Spirit of Christ in them, they’d been transferred from one life to another, and they knew that they weren’t of the world. Starting from that place, they then made a decision to enter the culture and society around them, bringing God’s Kingdom in like yeast in bread.
What about us? What place do we start from? Are we made up of the same stuff as the world around us – bread, not yeast? Or have we got our perspective settled, our minds made up? If we don’t get this one down, it’s easy to get caught up in questions like ‘how far can I go in this situation, in this party, with this boy/girl’, going round in circles and never really surfacing into the free, roomy life God offers. Before we know it we can be using the line ‘in the world but not of the world’ but looking exactly like the world and deep down not sure where we stand any more.
The Bible says that Christians are designed to ‘... shine among [others] like stars in the sky as you hold firmly to the word of life...' (Philippians 2:14-16 NIV). Designed to bring calm and peace into chaos, healing over sickness, and Jesus’ new life into empty places. Designed to hold the Holy Spirit within them, as a precious gift. To do that though, we must have a new heart. It starts inside. Letting God in, we can live a life that is just this beautiful, graceful, and magnetic - but we have to submit, and let Him do the legwork. Will you?
Do you know where you stand on this issue? Maybe think through your actions over the last week. Where did your decisions and actions take you – closer to God, or away?
