TODAY'S WORD 4U 2DAY
CLOSER THAN CLOSEPsalm 40:8
Why is it that we ask, ‘How far can I go in this situation/with this person?’ instead of ‘How close can I be to God’s will?’
For instance, with relationships with the opposite sex, we tend to ask ‘How far can I go before it matters?’ when 1 Corinthians 6:18 (NLT) says, ‘Run from sexual sin! No other sin so clearly affects the body as this one does. For sexual immorality is a sin against your own body.’ Your sexuality is precious. It’s yours – a secret part of you. Messing around with it demeans it. That’s why Paul posts a big warning sign, not a list of small print.
And anger. Psalm 4:4 says; ‘Don’t sin by letting anger control you. Think about it overnight and remain silent’ (NLT). But how many times have we gone to bed in rueful regret? We don’t stop and ask God how we can control our anger, but instead we wade into arguments with both feet.
We can also find ourselves giving into temptations too easily, thinking, ‘I can’t help it.’ But 1 Corinthians 10:13 (NLT) says, ‘God is faithful. He will not allow the temptation to be more than you can stand. When you are tempted, He will show you a way out so that you can endure.’
God wants you closer than close to His Will, because it’s there that you will have greater friendship with Him. Can you, like David, say ‘I take joy in doing your will, my God, for your instructions are written on my heart”?
Read the whole of Psalm 40 and discover the benefits David found by living God’s way. Ask God to help you get and stay closer than close to Him.
