TODAY'S WORD 4U 2DAY
(YOU’RE) THE NEW LIVING TRANSLATIONColossians 1:13
The New Century Version of the Bible writes today’s verse like this: ‘God has freed us from the power of darkness and brought us into the kingdom of His dear Son’. The New Living Translation puts it like this: ‘For He has rescued us from the kingdom of darkness and transferred us into the Kingdom of His dear Son.’ Today we’ve chosen the language of the King James Version because one word it uses – ‘translated’ – is particularly useful.
Think about when books or films are translated into a new language. The old language is foreign and needs changing to make sense in this new context. Today’s verse suggests something similar. When we are ‘translated ... into the kingdom of His dear Son’ it’s like we have had something deep about our lives changed, at the core. Our old way of thinking or behaving or believing is no use to us anymore. It doesn’t make sense. It sounds all foreign. Instead, we listen and behave upon the new translation. We’re a new character. Not by following any laws, trying really, really hard, or looking inside to ‘discover’ our real self; but only by God’s grace, ‘translating’ us.
Tom Wright puts it this way in his book, After You Believe, “Character—the transforming, shaping, and making of a life and its habits—will generate the sort of behaviour that rules might have pointed toward but which a ‘rule-keeping’ mentality can never achieve. And it will produce the sort of life which will in fact be true to itself—though the ‘self’ to which it will at last be true is the redeemed self, the transformed self, not the merely ‘discovered’ self of popular thought.”
