TODAY'S WORD 4U 2DAY
STRONG STUFFIsaiah 50:7
Ever tried drinking lukewarm tea? It doesn’t really hit the spot. Your first reaction is probably to spit it out. It’s like washing up in tepid water – just not a particularly pleasant experience. And that’s exactly how Jesus felt about the church in Laodicea: ‘I know you inside and out, and find little to my liking. You're not cold, you're not hot—far better to be either cold or hot! You're stale. You're stagnant. You make me want to vomit’ (Rev. 3:15–16 TM). That’s Jesus talking to His own people! Pretty strong stuff, but that’s what He says. And it all comes from a heart of love. Jesus doesn’t want wishy-washy followers who go through the motions, turning up for duty at church. He doesn’t want us to end up doing religion for the sake of religion. He wants true religion, with this heart: a passionate relationship with God, holding nothing back.
Euro 2012 kicks off today. Crowds of dedicated fans will be chanting their hearts out, hoping to yell and cheer their team down the road to victory. They’ll have given money, time and effort to be there. Anything that we’re really passionate about will lead naturally to commitment, which will eventually mean wilful sacrifice, if we’re serious about it. We are Jesus’ passion. What’s ours?
Feel like you’re just going through the motions?
Memory jog: go back to the place (the physical place) you first ‘encountered’ Jesus. Go and sit there for a while. Take time to take in the sights, smells, and sounds. Now hold in your mind the one thing that you feel you won’t bring to Jesus. Invite God in, and see what happens.
