TODAY'S WORD 4U 2DAY
IS CHRIST CREDIBLE? (2)John 19:28
Yesterday we asked you to think about why you believe in Jesus. Today, we’ll take a (quick!) look at what we think gives His message, death and resurrection believability.
Ever heard the phrase ‘There’s no smoke without fire?’ Think about that big oil rig explosion off the coast of America, a couple of years ago. Even some thirty miles away from the fire, the smoke kept on going and going.
It’s like that with the disciples in the early church. They were incredibly passionate, some would have said insanely so, about their real life relationship experience with the risen Jesus. Smoke without fire? Mass hallucination? Sure, it’s a possibility, and it’s been claimed. But all the sceptics needed to do to quiet the Christians’ commotion was produce Jesus’ dead body. They couldn’t.
Maybe the disciples stole it? But would so many have gone to their deaths (pretty gory ones too) for what they knew to be a lie, for no earthly gain?
Or maybe they were all honest fools, duped by a crazy idea. But, unlike followers of other religions, they didn’t die for an idea, they died for what they had seen and experienced – Christ’s resurrection – and His real life relationship with them, post-resurrection.
There’s more - the Jewish historian Josephus mentioned the disciples’ testimony, and was alive at their time. Shedloads of Old Testament prophecies point to Jesus – you don’t have to believe the Bible is holy to see that these historical predictions came true, even about things Jesus couldn’t have invented (like where he was born!)
These points just can’t be brushed away – they’re a powerful testimony to a real-life God!
