TODAY'S WORD 4U 2DAY
IS CHRIST CREDIBLE? (1)John 19:28
We’re taking a different tack with these next two days’ readings. Lots of people today shrug off Jesus by pointing to what they call the ‘historical inaccuracy’ of His resurrection. So we’re going to try and look at a simple way of looking at Christ’s resurrection that might not be so easy to write off.
Today we’ll start by asking, ‘what’s the problem?’ Well, even as far back as the AD 50s, Paul said that the message of Christ was “a stumbling block to Jews and nonsense to gentiles” (1 Corinthians 1:23, ISV) This meant that Jews thought His death and resurrection was blasphemy (“God dying?! How dare you suggest it!”), and the gentiles (people who didn’t believe in Israel’s God) thought His death and resurrection just didn’t make sense!
The gentiles were like many non-believers today – resurrection seems plain ridiculous to them. And perhaps they have a point. After all, people don’t tend to come back to life after they die. And it’s not scientifically provable that it actually happened, because in order for something to be scientifically provable, you need to be able to repeat it to test it... which we can’t do either.
So what gives it that all-important credibility?
Today, think about why you believe in Jesus. What makes you accept the Bible’s story that He died and came back again? What about it convinces you that it’s God’s Word? (Handy hint: This is a different kind of reading, so don’t worry if it makes you ask big, doubting questions. The fact is, we reckon that Jesus does stand up to this test, with good reasoning. Read again tomorrow to find out more!)
