TODAY'S WORD 4U 2DAY

BITTER TASTE

Hebrews 12:15

‘Jesus needs to be flushed out. He needs a little prod in the back to take centre stage. All this talking in stories is preventing him from action. Who is he anyway, some kind of holy Aesop hiding behind fables, or the revolutionary freedom-fighter promised to liberate the land from our enemy? A gentle nudge from me will force him to draw swords. And it will all start with a kiss…’

But Judas has it all wrong. He and Jesus are travelling on two completely different paths. And to Judas’ horror, the Messiah doesn’t whip up a crowd of angry rebels from the streets. There will be no uprising: instead, Jesus will walk a solitary trail to the cross. And there is no sign of bitterness from Jesus. He doesn’t call the disciples to revenge his injustice. He won’t pounce on best friend Simon Peter for turning a hazy shade of chicken. He doesn’t take the delete button to Thomas’ contribution to the story. Jesus knows His destiny and no amount of bitterness, betrayal or doubt will throw Him off course.

There’s a lesson for us. When friends give us the kiss of death, colleagues doubt us or other people blank us, stay on the track God has laid out: no swerving off on Resentment Road or Sour Taste Street: ‘Get rid of all bitterness … Instead, be kind to each other, tender-hearted, forgiving one another, just as God through Christ has forgiven you’ (Eph. 4:31–32 NLT).

What now?

Is there anyone you’re holding a grudge against? Ask for God’s help to forgive, and power to let go.

‘Watch out that no … bitterness grows up ...’ Hebrews 12:15 NLT
