TODAY'S WORD 4U 2DAY
BAD-MOUTHING1 Timothy 3:15
‘Our church is delightful! Everyone gets along so well, unlike the other so-called churches in the area. Have you heard about... well, I’m only telling you out of Christian concern, but the minister over the road at St Michaels just ran off with the church secretary!
If you’re at a good church, thank God, but watch out you don’t damage the rest of God’s Church by being part of the spiritual ‘in crowd’. If there’s one person that feels isolated in your church... that’s one person too many. But the answer to that problem might be you! There are always ways to help. Why not take them a cup of tea, ask them how they are and start taking a heartfelt interest in their life. After all, ‘God places the lonely in families’ (Ps. 68:6 NLT), which means you may have some brothers and sisters at church you need to get acquainted with.
As well as isolation, gossip can ruin things, and needs to be dealt with – by you! Don’t engage with it, even if it’s dressed up as Christian concern. ‘Don’t bad-mouth each other, friends’ (James 4:11 TM). Unless you are willing to talk directly to the person concerning something specific, don’t talk about them. And don’t let anybody else talk about them either. It might not be easy, but it is that straightforward.
How can you bring a good influence into your church? Starting with your words could be a good place. Unpack James 3:1–18 for advice, and ask God to highlight anything that needs correcting in you, especially in the area of what you say (and don’t say).
